Russell Thomas Vansteel

Russell Thomas Vansteel, age 84, of Croswell, formerly of St. Clair Shores, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital.

Russell was born November 19, 1933 in Quincy, Illinois to the late Frank and Mathilda (Hermesmeyer) Vansteel. He served in the United States Navy from April 1951 to October 1954. He met his late wife, Jeanne Marie (Hickner) Vansteel, while they were both employed at Vernors ginger ale company of Detroit. They were married August 31, 1957 in St. Clair Shores, MI. He worked for Michigan Bell & AT&T for 32 years as a Cable Splicer before retiring on January 5, 1999.

He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America for most of his life. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout, served as Scout Master for many years and volunteered up until 2016. He also enjoyed Photography, Woodworking, Model Railroading and Camping.

Russell is survived by two sons, Steven (Susan) Vansteel and Michael (Sue) Vansteel; one daughter, Cheri (Rich) Relf; five grandchildren, Clay (Kali) Vansteel, Russell (Caitlin) Vansteel, Corey Vansteel, Adrian Vansteel-Verbit and Michelle Relf; twin great-grandchildren, Reagan and Rylee Vansteel; one step-great-grandchild, Cheyanne; one brother, Chuck (Mardelle) Vansteel of Quincy, IL and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jeanne Marie Vansteel, on December 3, 2017; son Thomas G. Vansteel; siblings; Marge Minogue, Frank G. Vansteel, Jr., Barbara Benzaquin and Ruth Pietkiewicz.

A private family memorial to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. Inurnment Great Lakes National Cemetery.

  1. I was in a meeting this morning and met someone with the last name of Vansteel and it immediately reminded me of Mr. Vansteel. Came to the office and looked him up and learned of his passing. My sincere condolences to his family. My family lived across the street from the Vansteel family on Raymond in St, Clair Shores. Mr. Vansteel was a good man.
