Michael Vernon Wood

Michael Vernon Wood, a resident of Harrison Township, passed away on December 6, 2022, at the age of 71.

Michael was born to his parents, Marshall and Patricia (Gistinger), on December 16, 1950. He was raised in Madison Heights and graduated from Lamphere High School in 1969. He attended Macomb Community College before entering the Army in February of 1971. After completing basic training at the US Army Training Center in Fort Knox, KY., he served as an Army Specialist E-4 until he was honorably discharged on November 10, 1972.

After serving his country, Michael returned to metro Detroit to begin a career as a pipefitter. As a member of the Pipefitters, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Service Local Union No. 636, he was recognized in January of 2004 for setting a high standard of fraternal conduct with his loyalty, counsel, and participation in union affairs during his career, which spanned over 30 years.

After his retirement, Michael enjoyed reading books, growing his favorite tomatoes or hot peppers, and cooking for his family, especially his famous cheesecakes. Spending time with his family meant more to Michael than anything else. He truly got joy from the simple things, like sharing his love for the theater, folk music, and a good cup of tea with his granddaughters. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Michael leaves behind his daughters Lindsay (Ray) and Leah (Chris), granddaughters Maya, Peyton, Lucille, and Delaney, siblings Mark and Karen, the mother of his daughters Linda, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. His parents and beloved sisters, Sharon and Marcella, preceded him in death.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, December 16, 2022, at the Gramer Funeral Home, 48271 Van Dyke Avenue in Shelby Township, Michigan. A memorial service will commence at 3:00 pm at the same location.

In place of flowers, those wishing to make contributions may do so to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s Macomb County Mental Health Center.

Condolence Messages

  1. Mike even though we haven’t touched base in a couple of years you will be missed. We had such fun time together in high school and sharing an apartment together when we were going to college. You may not remember this but our fun way to wash dishes was to just put the dishes in the shower and turn the hot water on. How about that huge bong we made with an Army gas mask. How about putting three Christmas wrapping tubes together for another way to make a bong? One guy on one end one on the other. Oh God the laughs we had. Oh man I’m telling too many stories that night get us in trouble. See ya on the other side friend
